Shots Fired and Arrests Made After Vehicle Pursuit in Imperial County

Winterhaven, CA – June 9, 2024 — On Sunday evening, chaos erupted near the intersection of Cocopah Road and Indian Rock Road in Winterhaven, leading to a high-speed chase and multiple arrests.

At approximately 8:17 PM, the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) Winterhaven Station received reports of around 15 gunshots in the area. Responding to the call, a deputy conducted a patrol check of a nearby trailer park, where they identified a suspicious Ford F-150. Upon noticing the patrol unit, the driver of the Ford attempted to flee the scene at a high speed, endangering local residents.

The ICSO deputy initiated a traffic stop, which quickly escalated into a brief vehicle pursuit. The chase came to an abrupt halt when the fleeing vehicle became immobilized in a dirt area. The driver then attempted to escape on foot, leading to a short chase and subsequent arrest by the deputy. With assistance from the Quechan Police Department, two additional suspects were located and apprehended.

A search of the Ford F-150 uncovered a 30-round 7.62 mm AK-47 magazine, 7.62 mm ammunition, and .22 caliber expanded ammunition. Further investigation along the pursuit route led to the discovery of an AK-47 rifle and a Ruger Model 10/22 rifle.

The driver and one of the passengers were subsequently booked into the Imperial County Jail. Charges include reckless evasion of law enforcement, multiple weapons offenses, possession of extended magazines, and unlawful discharge of a firearm. The third suspect’s involvement is under investigation, and further charges may be pending.

The ICSO emphasizes their commitment to maintaining public safety and continues to investigate the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the gunfire and the suspects’ actions.

Authorities urge anyone with information about this incident to contact the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office.
