El Centro Police Department to Increase Traffic and E-Bike Enforcement
The El Centro Police Department has announced an increase in traffic enforcement patrols to combat key safety issues, including speeding, street racing, and modified vehicles. The officers will focus on primary causes of collisions to prevent them and ensure the safety of drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
In addition to traditional traffic enforcement, ECPD will also begin strict enforcement of electric bicycle (e-bike) regulations. With the growing use of e-bikes in El Centro, riders will be made tocomply with the same traffic laws as motorvehicles and bicycles.
E-Bike Laws in El Centro Explained
Under California law (AB 1096), e-bikes are classified under three categories:
• Type 1: Pedal-assist only with a 20 mph assisted speed.
• Type 2: Throttle-assisted with a topspeed of 20 mph.
• Type 3: Pedal-assist with a top speed of 28 mph. Bicyclists should be a minimum of 16 years and have a helmet.
Where to Ride an E-Bike in El Centro
E-bike users are treated equally as ordinarybicycles, including obeying red lights and stop signs, giving way to pedestrians, and using bike lanes when available. Type 3 e-bikes, on the other hand, are subjected to additional restrictions and are prohibited from:
• Class 1 (separated bike paths) and Class 4 (protected bike lanes) unless by local authority permit.
• Sidewalks and certain trails except whereotherwise designated by the city.

ECPD has noted an increase in traffic violations and abuse of e-bikes in El Centro, which leads to safety concerns for all road users, drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. By conducting more patrols, the officers aim to:
• Reduce reckless driving and street racing.

• Bring e-bike riders in accordance with traffic rules, which increases cyclist and pedestrian safety.
