El Centro City Council Opens Application Process to Fill Vacancy Following Former Mayor Tomás Oliva’s Resignation

El Centro, CA – March 24, 2025 – The El Centro City Council has commenced the application process to appoint a new council member, following the resignation of former Mayor Tomás Oliva earlier this month. Oliva, who was first elected to the council in 2018 and reelected in 2022, announced his resignation effective March 4, 2025.

The application period opened on March 22 and will close on April 6 at midnight. Prospective candidates can access applications online at www.cityofelcentro.org or obtain them in person at the City Clerk’s Office, located at 1275 Main St., El Centro, during business hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Eligibility criteria require applicants to be at least 18 years old, reside within El Centro city limits, and be registered voters in the city at the time of application submission. Completed applications can be submitted via email to cityclerk@cityofelcentro.org or delivered in person to the City Clerk’s Office.

Following the application deadline, the City Council will review submissions and select the top five candidates. These finalists will participate in public interviews during a special meeting scheduled for April 16 at 5:30 p.m. The appointed candidate will be announced on April 21 at 10 a.m., with a swearing-in ceremony to follow.
