Brawley City Manager Tyler Salcido Resigns; Chief of Police Jimmy Duran to Serve as Interim City Manager

#BRAWLEY, CA – July 30, 2024 – The City of Brawley announced today that City Manager Tyler Salcido will be stepping down from his position, following his acceptance of a new role as Executive Director of the Imperial Council Local Agency Commission (IVLAFCO), which he will assume on August 26, 2024.

In response to Salcido's resignation, the Brawley City Council convened a special meeting at noon on July 30, 2024, to discuss the plan for selecting a new City Manager. The meeting, held in closed session in accordance with Cal. Govt. Code Sec. 54957(b)(1), concluded with the announcement that Chief of Police Jimmy Duran has agreed in principle to serve as the interim City Manager. Chief Duran will maintain his role as Chief of Police while serving in this interim capacity.

The City Council is expected to ratify Chief Duran’s contract for the interim City Manager position at its upcoming regularly scheduled meeting on August 6, 2024. Both Salcido and Duran have committed to ensuring a smooth transition.

Mayor Ramon Castro expressed his gratitude for Salcido’s contributions to the city, praising his leadership and accomplishments. In a statement on Instagram, Mayor Castro said, “Tyler has done a fantastic job leading our city through difficult times and has set us up for success going forward. He has managed to balance our budget, expedited and improved services, and most importantly moved many projects forward that are improving our city among many other accomplishments. I will certainly miss his guidance and his friendship. I wish him the best in his new position as IVLAFCO CEO. He will most certainly do a great job for them as well!”

Mayor Castro also voiced his support for Chief Duran stepping into the interim City Manager role. “I'm also excited and grateful that we have such depth within our ranks that we were able to rely on our very own Chief of Police Jimmy Duran to step in as Interim City Manager. Chief Duran brings a wealth of experience. In just over three years, he has managed to transform our police force. He has brought in millions in grant money, created programs for our youth, and has created partnerships with multiple agencies to help the city fight crime. His accomplishments are many. His leadership is second to none and will certainly bring a fresh perspective to this position.”

In addition, city Council member George Nava, who recently announced he will not be running for reelection made a statement on Facebook stating “Great things are taking place, and there is a solid succession plan. Chief Duran has been instrumental in improving our community, and he is a phenomenal leader. Some solid candidates with heavy experience in economic development and community engagement are running for city council, so city residents have some great options to choose from. Aside from that, the leadership team, to include directors and managers are working hard to lead their respective teams and improve our community.”

The City Council congratulates Mr. Salcido on his new role and thanks him for his dedicated service to Brawley. As the city prepares for this transition, both leaders have pledged their cooperation to maintain continuity and progress for the community.
