Hoax Email Prompts Lockdown at Multiple Schools in Imperial Valley and nationwide

BRAWLEY, CA – November 17th 2023

Several Catholic schools in Imperial Valley, including Sacred Heart School in Brawley, were placed on lockdown today following a hoax bomb threat sent via email to multiple Catholic schools in the region. The threat disrupted scheduled activities, including a Turkey Trot and raffle planned for the students.

The incident unfolded earlier today when schools across the country received bomb threats via email. Local officials were promptly notified, and law enforcement, including the Brawley Police Department, swiftly responded to assess the situation.

Annalisa Burgos, Principal of Sacred Heart School, addressed the community in a statement, reassuring parents and guardians about the safety of students and staff. She stated, "While this incident turned out to be a large and disruptive hoax, we take all threats seriously. Out of an abundance of caution, we alerted the Brawley Police Department and took proper precautions."

Despite the unsettling situation, the school prioritized the safety of its students and staff. The scheduled Turkey Trot activity, initially interrupted by the lockdown, resumed after the police department determined it was safe for everyone to proceed outside.

To ensure the security of the premises, a bomb threat K9 unit conducted thorough inspections of all school buildings, including the church, hall, parish office, and school. After a comprehensive investigation, all facilities were declared clear, and students and staff were released to go home.

Principal Burgos emphasized the school's commitment to safety amid the rise in such threats, stating, "This widespread transmission of these types of threats is in keeping with trends many schools have seen this school year. While this is unfortunate, we will continue to assume that threats are credible until proven otherwise."

Parents and guardians were thanked for their patience and cooperation during the incident, and the school community was reminded to remain vigilant in ensuring the safety and protection of everyone.

As authorities investigate the source of the hoax email, the affected schools are resolute in maintaining a secure environment for their students and staff.
