Calexico Unified High School Advances with Measure V and Measure Q Projects

Calexico, CA - Calexico Unified High School is undergoing significant transformations with two key projects aimed at enhancing campus facilities. A recent groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting ceremony marked a pivotal moment for the school community.

Measure V-Funded Expansion and Modernization:

The first project involves a comprehensive expansion and modernization effort covering the majority of the campus. Approximately 30,684 square feet will undergo demolition, new construction, and renovation. Additions include a new administrative building, two STEAM classrooms buildings, and a multi-purpose room/cafeteria. Infrastructure upgrades, ADA compliance enhancements, and exterior improvements are integral components of this initiative.

Measure V Two-Story 12-Classroom Building:

Funded by Measure V, the construction of a two-story, 12-classroom building is set to begin in December 2020. This addition, mirroring the design of a 16-classroom building completed in October 2020, will cater to 540 students in grades 10th, 11th, and 12th.

Measure Q Contributions:

Measure Q, a $47 million school bond measure approved by voters in November 2020, is channeling collective investment into additional new construction at Calexico High School. Projects include a multipurpose room and food service building, an administration and student services building, and two state-of-the-art STEM buildings.

Community Celebrates Collective Investment:

The celebration brought together school board members, district staff, students, and community members. Superintendent Arturo Jimenez emphasized the transformative impact these projects would have on students, staff, and facilities. The occasion recognized the contributions of various individuals, including those who voted for Measure V in 2016 and Measure Q in 2020.

The new facilities, including a multipurpose room, a student store, and a full-service kitchen, were showcased during the ceremony. The proposed two-story administration and student services building will house various offices and support spaces.

One of the highlights is the two highly anticipated STEM buildings, set to provide cutting-edge facilities for robotics classrooms and labs, wet labs, lecture and biology classrooms, a staff break room, and other support spaces.

Ensuring Transparency and Accountability:

Addressing concerns about the preceding bond, Measure V, Superintendent Jimenez assured that the team has been vigilant in monitoring spending. Weekly meetings with the construction team, public board updates, and open meetings have been conducted to increase transparency. Despite inflation concerns, Jimenez proudly stated that the projects are on time, on schedule, and within budget.

Community Acknowledgments:

Community members, including alumni, parents, and Measure Q Citizens Oversight Committee volunteers, were recognized for their contributions to the projects. The completion of Measure Q projects is expected to redefine the educational landscape at Calexico Unified High School, providing modern facilities for current and future generations.
