Starbucks Ends Open-Door Policy: Paying Customers Only Starting January 27
Starbucks has announced a significant policy change, ending its open-door policy that allowed non-paying individuals to use its facilities. Effective January 27, 2025, access to Starbucks cafés, patios, and restrooms will be restricted to paying customers and staff.
This decision reverses the 2018 policy implemented after a controversial incident in Philadelphia, where two Black men were arrested for not making a purchase while waiting for a business meeting. The new Coffeehouse Code of Conduct aims to enhance the experience for paying customers by creating a more comfortable and secure environment.
The updated code also prohibits behaviors such as discrimination, harassment, consumption of outside alcohol, smoking, vaping, drug use, and panhandling. Employees are empowered to enforce these rules, with the option to involve law enforcement if necessary.
Under the leadership of CEO Brian Niccol, Starbucks is introducing initiatives to attract more in-store customers. Starting January 27, the company will offer free refills of hot or iced coffee to customers who choose to stay in the store and use reusable or ceramic cups. This effort aligns with the company’s goal to reestablish itself as a welcoming community coffeehouse.
These changes are part of a broader strategy to address declining sales and customer traffic, aiming to create a safer and more inviting atmosphere for patrons and staff alike.
