Weist Lake County Park Reopens Following Closure due to Toxic Algae

Brawley, July 11, 2023 - After being closed for several weeks, Weist Lake County Park has reopened to the public. The closure was initiated due to the discovery of toxic algae in the lake's waters. State officials have been diligently conducting tests at the northern side of the lake, near Brawley, to assess whether the water quality meets the necessary thresholds for safe recreational activities.

The Board of Supervisors meeting held on July 11, 2023 shed further light on the situation. During the meeting, officials discussed their recent conversations with the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) regarding measures to improve the lake's water flow and overall quality. The goal is to implement strategies that will enhance the recreational experience and ensure the safety of visitors.

Updates were shared regarding discussions held with IID representatives. The focus was on addressing drain crossings and finding more efficient and cost-effective solutions. While progress has been made, further work is still underway, with one major project moving forward. Multiple other projects are being carefully considered, and the collaboration with IID continues as they assess their capacity to provide support. Additionally, discussions are underway to update the existing agreement between the county and IID, encompassing all drain crossings.

The reopening of Weist Lake County Park brings relief to local residents and visitors who enjoy its recreational opportunities. However, authorities urge caution and adherence to any posted guidelines or restrictions to ensure the safety and well-being of all park-goers.

The ongoing efforts of state officials and collaborative discussions with IID demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and the provision of a safer and more enjoyable experience for those who frequent Weist Lake County Park. The public is encouraged to stay updated on any future developments or advisories regarding the lake's water quality and recreational accessibility.

As summer continues, residents and visitors can once again enjoy the natural beauty and recreational amenities offered by Weist Lake County Park, now with the reassurance of thorough testing and ongoing efforts to maintain a healthy environment for all.
