Central Union High School Investigates Shooting Threat; Increased Security Measures Planned

El Centro, CA — On September 12, 2024, the Central Union High School District (CUHSD) was made aware of a potential safety threat after graffiti was discovered in a boys’ restroom stall at Central Union High School (CUHS). The message, “shooting up the school 9/16/24,” prompted immediate action by school officials and the El Centro Police Department (ECPD).

In response to the situation, CUHSD worked closely with ECPD to investigate the matter and ensure the safety of students and staff. The El Centro Police Department was notified at 3:50 p.m. and immediately began coordinating with school administrators to address the threat. District officials thanked the community for their vigilance, acknowledging the reports submitted through the Catapult emergency notification system. However, the district clarified that additional reports are unnecessary unless individuals have information regarding the responsible party.

After a thorough investigation, the ECPD identified a 17-year-old CUHS student involved with the threat. The juvenile was arrested and booked into Imperial County Juvenile Hall on charges of felony criminal threats. A search of the student’s personal property and residence, conducted with the assistance of the minor’s parents, revealed no weapons, and authorities confirmed there are no additional threats to the school or community.

The El Centro Police Department confirmed their involvement, stating, “We are working with school administrators to ensure the safety of our children, staff, and the public. Although we are working to determine the credibility of the posting, we ask that if you see something of concern, report it to school officials or the Police Department immediately.”

While the investigation unfolded, CUHSD reassured parents and students that school would continue as planned on Friday, September 13, with increased security measures in place. More police officers were deployed on campus, and staff remained vigilant throughout the day. CUHS also went ahead with its scheduled pep assemblies and football game.

“We expect a normal school day tomorrow, but we will remain vigilant,” the CUHS administration said in a statement. “As always, if you see something, say something.”

Social media platforms amplified concerns as images and discussions surrounding the graffiti began circulating. One post in the Facebook group “Rants and Raves” expressed frustration over the incident, calling for stricter security measures. “Considering the world we live in, this is a serious issue that demands immediate action. Schools should be guarded like banks! Our kids are more important than money!” the post read.

The El Centro Elementary School District also sent an electronic message to parents and staff, informing them of the situation at Central Union High School.

As the investigation progresses, CUHSD and law enforcement encourage anyone with relevant information to come forward. Officer Miguel Garrido of the ECPD can be contacted at mgarrido@ecpd.org. Updates will be provided as new details emerge.
