The Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill: Preparing for Safety
Every year, on the third Thursday of October, people across the world participate in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill. In 2023, this important event is scheduled for Thursday, October 19th, at 10:20 a.m. local time. The drill provides a valuable opportunity for individuals, businesses, schools, and organizations to rehearse essential earthquake safety procedures, particularly the “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” technique.
Imperial Valley College, along with other colleges and organizations, will join the millions of participants in practicing this life-saving safety action. The Great ShakeOut Drill is more than a routine exercise; it’s a crucial preparation for safeguarding yourself during an actual earthquake.
Staying Safe During an Earthquake: The “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” Method
When an earthquake strikes, it’s essential to know how to react swiftly and safely. The “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” method is a set of actions designed to minimize the risk of injury during seismic activity.
1. Drop: As soon as you feel the ground shaking, get down on your hands and knees. This posture provides stability and prevents you from being knocked over.
2. Cover: Take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture if available, such as a table or desk. If there’s nothing to hide under, shield your head and neck with your arms and seek shelter against an interior wall, away from windows and heavy objects.
3. Hold On: Hold your position until the shaking stops. Earthquakes can vary in intensity and duration, so maintaining your protective posture is crucial until it’s safe to move.
Preparation for Earthquakes: What You Can Do
1. Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit with essential supplies like water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, a first-aid kit, and personal medications.
2. Communication Plan: Establish a communication plan with your family and loved ones. Designate a meeting place in case you get separated during the quake.
3. Secure Heavy Items: Secure heavy objects and furniture to prevent them from falling during an earthquake.
4. Practice Drills: Participate in earthquake drills like the Great ShakeOut to ensure you and your family are well-prepared.
5. Stay Informed: Keep yourself informed about earthquake risk in your area and local emergency procedures.
In the Imperial Valley College community and beyond, the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill serves as a vital reminder of the importance of earthquake preparedness. By practicing safety procedures and being proactive in our preparations, we can significantly reduce the risks associated with seismic events. Remember, safety starts with knowledge and practice. So, be ready to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” to protect yourself when the earth shakes.
