Ron Rubin Awarded “Farmer of the Year” and His Remarkable Journey in Agriculture

In a vibrant gathering at the Annual Dinner Meeting of the Imperial County Farm Bureau, a true legend in the world of agriculture was celebrated. Ron Rubin, a native of the Valley, stood in the spotlight, receiving the distinguished 18th Annual Jim Kuhn Farmer of the Year award.

Ron’s journey to this honor is one marked by unwavering dedication to the land. He began his educational path in the heart of Holtville, graduating from Holtville High School, with subsequent chapters at Imperial Valley College and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. But it wasn’t just academia that shaped him; it was a lifelong passion for agriculture.

Ron Rubin’s bond with the Imperial County Farm Bureau goes back over 25 years, where he holds the critical position of treasurer, ensuring the financial well-being of this vital organization. However, his influence doesn’t stop within the walls of the Farm Bureau; it reverberates throughout the community.

Beyond the fields, Ron is a beacon of hope and support. He is actively engaged with his church and numerous organizations, including the Imperial Valley Food Bank, Brawley Feed the Need, and the Mid-Winter Fair Animal Auction. His expertise also extends to industry associations, where he serves on the Cal Alfalfa Seed Research Board and acts as a commissioner for the Cal Wheat Commission.

Ron Rubin’s commitment isn’t confined to agriculture alone. He also plays a pivotal role as a Board Member of Community Valley Bank, a testament to his influence beyond the fields.

But Ron’s story doesn’t end there. In 2006, he and his son, Kurt, embarked on an exciting venture, founding Rubin Seeds, LLC, a company specializing in cultivating seeds for agricultural use. A new chapter of the Rubin legacy unfolded in 2014 when Ron, along with his daughter Kaylin, formed the Imperial Valley Research Company, LLC.

The crowning moment of this celebration was the presentation of the 18th Annual Jim Kuhn Farmer of the Year award to Ron Rubin, a recognition well-deserved. In response, the ever-humble Ron shared his thoughts, stating, “I am honored. I was not expecting it at all.”

Yet, it wasn’t just Ron Rubin who received recognition that evening. The Farm Bureau also extended its gratitude to former Imperial County Agriculture Commissioner Carlos Ortiz, bestowing upon him the 2023 Friend of the Farmer award.

Ron Rubin’s story is not merely one of accomplishments but a testament to a life dedicated to agriculture, community, and family. His journey showcases the essence of being a steward of the land and a pillar of the community, leaving an indelible mark on the fields and hearts of the Imperial Valley.
