Late-Night Standoff in Calexico: Birthday Celebration Takes a Dark Turn as Armed Suspect Surrenders to Police
Calexico, CA - On November 2, 2023, officers responded to a call regarding fireworks in the 1200 block of Calle de Oro East. Upon their arrival, the officers heard multiple rounds of what appeared to be rifle gunfire.
As the officers surrounded the residence, they observed 45-year-old Jose Dominguez, who had been celebrating his birthday that day while brandishing an AR-15 style rifle. Upon commanding the suspect to drop the weapon, he reentered the residence and barricaded himself inside.
Following this incident, officers, along with USBP agents and their technical units (BORTAC), surrounded the residence. After approximately an hour-long standoff, Jose surrendered to the officers and was taken into custody, as confirmed by the Calexico Police Department.
Subsequently, officers obtained a search warrant for the residence. During the search, they discovered 16 assault rifle shells in the backyard, along with two rifles and two handguns.
The suspect was arrested and booked into the Imperial County Jail for the negligent discharge of firearms. Following his arrest, law enforcement officials will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, aiming to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the discharge of the firearms and the possession of unregistered firearms.
