Fire in Calexico Leaves Multiple Families Homeless; Community Comes Together to Help
CALEXICO, Calif. – A significant fire erupted in Calexico on Friday afternoon, impacting four homes and displacing several families. According to the Calexico Police Department (CPD), the fire originated around 2:00 p.m. from a vehicle parked under a carport in the vicinity of S. Paulin Avenue and E. 7th Street. The blaze damaged four structures and led to the displacement of five families. High winds exacerbated the fire's spread.
Fire departments from Calexico, El Centro, Imperial County, Brawley, and Holtville collaborated to extinguish the fire. During the operation, a Calexico firefighter sustained injuries. The Red Cross, along with City of Calexico officials, provided immediate support to the affected families. While no foul play is suspected, an investigation is ongoing.
In response to the displacement, the City of Calexico has temporarily relocated three large families, totaling 18 individuals, to a local hotel using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. The hotel is offering breakfast to the families during their stay. This temporary arrangement is set for a week, allowing the city to coordinate further assistance with nonprofit organizations and government agencies. The Red Cross continues to offer additional support.
Today CPD asked the community for donations to aid those involved stating “ANY DONATION WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.” Thankfully according to the Calexico Police Department. All necessities requested have been donated “we are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and generosity following our recent recent request for donations” said CPD “ at this time we do not require any more donations thank you once again for your incredible response and for helping us”
