Father Uses Children in Vandalizing Slowjamastan: ‘Micronation’ Grapples with Disturbing Break-In
The Republic of Slowjamastan, a small but vibrant 11-acre micronation located near Ocotillo Wells State Park, is known for its quirky laws and lighthearted approach to governance. However, the self-proclaimed nation faced an unwelcome reality recently when a father and his children, along with an accomplice, committed acts of vandalism and burglary within its borders.
The Incident
Surveillance footage shows two men, identified as Shane Lewis Harris and Joe , trespassing on Slowjamastan property with three minors. The group broke into locked structures, vandalized the area with spray paint, and stole items. Disturbingly, the men appeared to involve the children in their crimes, with one saying, “Who wants to try?” and later praising a child wielding a crowbar.
One minor, reluctant to participate, expressed hesitation, saying, “No, no, no, I do not think this is a good idea.” The child even asked, “What if they actually try to do something and actually charge us?” to which the father replied, “I’ll take the heat for it. I’ll get out of jail. I’ve done it before.”
The group’s actions were recorded over 20 minutes of footage, and their Instagram account, @surfingruinedmylife, further connected them to the incident.
A Serious Matter for a Whimsical Nation
Randy Williams, Slowjamastan’s self-appointed Sultan, expressed dismay at the events.
“Slowjamastan is about fun and community,” said Williams. “Ironically, just days before this, our team cleaned the desert as part of our Adopt-a-Highway program. These parents not only caused physical damage but endangered their own children.”
While some initially believed the incident to be satire, the Republic clarified that this was no joke, labeling the actions as a “serious matter.”
Community Response and Reward
In response, Slowjamastan has offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to arrests and convictions. Tips can be submitted via their website or email.
The Republic later posted an update on social media:
“Suspects have been identified. Stay tuned for full details. We have SO MUCH to share! And thank you to everyone who reached out to us. We love and appreciate you.”
For Slowjamastan, the damage was less about property and more about the ethical implications. Williams and his team emphasized concern for the children involved, who were placed in a precarious position by their guardians.
A Cautionary Tale
The incident serves as a reminder of the real-world responsibilities that accompany the whimsical nature of Slowjamastan. While the microstate was designed for fun and escapism, the Sultan hopes this event can spark broader conversations about accountability and the example set for future generations.
