Calexico Man Arrested for Attempted Check Fraud, Concealed Replica Firearm Found
Calexico police arrested a local man on January 9, 2025, after he attempted to cash a fraudulent check at a check-cashing business. Officers identified the suspect as 28-year-old Andrew Leyva, a Calexico resident, who had successfully cashed a fraudulent check for over $1,100 just days prior.
According to authorities, Leyva returned to the same business, attempting to pass another altered check. Employees, recognizing the suspicious nature of the transaction, contacted law enforcement. Officers arrived and detained Leyva at the scene.
During the investigation, police discovered Leyva was carrying a concealed replica firearm in his waistband. Additionally, several modified checks were found in his possession.
Leyva was taken into custody and booked into Imperial County Jail on charges of check fraud. The case remains under investigation as officers work to determine whether others may have been involved in the scheme.
