Stabbing incident at BUHS leads to lockdown, victim is stable condition

Brawley Union High School (BUHS) was placed on lockdown earlier today following a stabbing incident involving multiple students. A video circulating online shows two male suspects engaged in a physical altercation, with one being stabbed in the stomach. The incident occurred in front of the school library. An image also shows a student being taken out of the school on a stretcher, confirming the severity of the situation.

According to a press release from the Brawley Police Department, the altercation occurred at approximately 10:57 A.M. The School Resource Officer (SRO) was on campus when the fight broke out between three male students. By the time the SRO arrived at the scene, the fight had ended, and it was discovered that one student had been stabbed. The injured student received medical treatment on-site and was transported by paramedics, while the other two students involved were identified and taken into custody. The police department believes this to be an isolated incident but is encouraging anyone with additional information to contact School Resource Officer Ayala at (760) 344-2111.

In an email to the school community, BUHS administration stated:

“Earlier today, an altercation occurred on the premises of BUHS, which resulted in a student being seriously injured. The injured student is currently receiving medical care, and we are in close contact with medical personnel to ensure their well-being. The suspect involved in the incident has been taken into custody by law enforcement. To ensure the safety of all students and staff, the school was placed on a ‘hold’ status.”

As of now, the lockdown has been lifted, and students have been released from classrooms. Parents who were waiting outside during the lockdown have been updated on the situation. However, the investigation into the incident is still ongoing, and law enforcement remains on-site as they gather further details.

Student and Parent Reactions

A sophomore student, who wished to remain anonymous, commented on the incident, saying, “I think they were fighting over a girl or something, but I don’t know if that’s for real.” He added, “I think it’s sad that this happened, and the school really needs to do something about it. We’re the only open campus school in the Imperial Valley, and coincidentally, we’re the worst.”

One concerned parent shared her thoughts, stating, “As parents, we need to do better, and BUHS needs to do the same.” She continued, “Is this the incident they’re waiting for to enforce better security?”

Video Allegedly Posted by the Victim

A video allegedly posted by the victim surfaced online, showing him in a helicopter being airlifted to a San Diego hospital.

Message from the School District

Later in the day, parents received a pre-recorded message from the Brawley Union High School District, assuring them that the safety of students and staff remains the district’s top priority. The message read:

“Good evening! The Brawley Union High School District assures its community that the safety of students and staff remains our top priority. We are actively collaborating with the Brawley Police Department regarding today’s incident on the BUHS campus. The district takes all safety incidents seriously and is committed to ensuring a safe environment for all students. All schools in the Brawley Union High School District will be open tomorrow, and inspections are scheduled.”

“We will continue to follow our established safety protocols and implement additional security measures, including an increased presence at school sites. Additionally, counseling services will be available to any students affected by the incident today. Thank you.”

The safety and well-being of students and staff continue to be the school’s top priority. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
