Brawley City Council Honors Community Leaders, Pushes Forward Key Projects
BRAWLEY, CA – The Brawley City Council convened on February 18, 2025, to discuss and approve a range of initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, expanding housing opportunities, and enhancing community services. The meeting also included special recognitions for local leaders and a presentation on regional water and energy issues.
Honoring Local Leaders
In celebration of Black History Month, the Council issued a proclamation honoring former Mayor Don Campbell for his service and contributions to the city. Campbell’s leadership and dedication to Brawley were recognized as instrumental in shaping the community.
Additionally, the Council commended Nicholas Navarro for his achievements with the Eagle Scouts. Navarro’s involvement in community projects was highlighted as an example of civic engagement and youth leadership in Brawley.
Water and Energy Discussion with Imperial Irrigation District
At the invitation of Mayor Gil Rebollar, Imperial Irrigation District (IID) Chairwoman Gina Young Dockstader and IID Administration provided a presentation addressing water and energy issues affecting Brawley residents. IID representatives outlined available assistance programs and committed to increasing outreach efforts, including providing information sessions for the Brawley Senior Citizens Get-Together Club.
Housing Development Moves Forward
As part of ongoing efforts to expand housing availability, the Council approved the first reading of Zone Change Ordinance ZC 24-04. This measure will rezone two parcels on Palm Avenue from Neighborhood Commercial (C-1) to Single Family Residential (R-1), allowing for the construction of new homes. The zoning change aligns with the city’s General Plan and aims to support Brawley’s growing residential needs.
Infrastructure and Public Works Investments
The Council approved a budget adjustment to fund the purchase of two Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for the city’s Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). These replacements are necessary to maintain the aeration system and ensure compliance with environmental standards.
In a continued effort to improve city roads, the Council awarded a contract to The Holt Group for the design of Phase 1 of the Street Rehabilitation Project. This project will develop construction plans and cost estimates based on the city’s Pavement Management System, ensuring strategic and effective road repairs.
Boosting Fire Department Resources
The Council also approved an amendment to the Fiscal Year 2024/25 budget to reflect a $140,419.23 revenue increase for the Brawley Fire Department. These funds, reimbursed through the California Fire Assistance Agreement for the department’s wildfire response efforts in Fresno and San Bernardino counties, will be used for overtime costs and equipment purchases to enhance daily operations.
Commitment to Community Growth
The February 18 meeting reaffirmed the Council’s focus on strengthening Brawley’s infrastructure, fostering community engagement, and ensuring city departments have the resources necessary to serve residents effectively.
